French golfer, Antoine Rozner, lit up the opening round of the Korea Championship with a stunning 63, taking an early lead at the Woo Jeong Hills Country Club in Cheonan.
Rozner, who had finished tied for sixth at last week’s BMW International Open in Germany, made a flying start in Korea with six birdies in his first seven holes. He picked up three more shots on the back nine, with only a single blemish on the 14th hole, to finish the day with a nine-under-par 63.
His score is the best opening round at the Korea Championship in the last 10 years and sets the bar high for the rest of the field, which includes some of the biggest names in golf like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and Hideki Matsuyama.
Rozner’s impressive round was not unexpected. He has been in good form this season, winning his second European Tour title in May at the Golf in Dubai Championship. The 28-year-old Frenchman, who turned pro in 2017, has also posted top-10 finishes at the Qatar Masters, the Austrian Golf Open, and the Canary Islands Championship.
Speaking after his round, Rozner expressed his delight at his performance, saying, “I’m really happy with the round today. I got off to a really good start, and I was able to keep it going throughout the day. The course is in great condition, and it suited my game well, so I’m looking forward to the rest of the week.”
The Woo Jeong Hills Country Club is hosting the Korea Championship for the second time, with the first event held in 2019. The tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the European Tour, has a prize purse of $1.3 million.
The Korea Championship is one of the final events before the start of the Olympics, with many players hoping to use the tournament to fine-tune their game ahead of the Tokyo Games. The competition is also part of the qualification process for the Ryder Cup, with players hoping to impress Team Europe captain, Padraig Harrington.
Rozner’s impressive performance on the opening day of the tournament will undoubtedly put him in good stead for the rest of the week. He will be looking to build on his lead and continue his good form, as he aims to add another title to his growing list of achievements on the European Tour.
Overall, the Korea Championship promises to be an exciting event, with some of the biggest names in golf competing for the title. As the tournament progresses, golf fans will be eagerly watching to see who emerges victorious and who will be left disappointed.
