As a precautionary measure following the derailment of a chemical train in West Virginia, the local water company updated its water purification system.
According to the local clock, it is time in Huntington, West Virginia. Following the derailment of a train carrying chemicals, which sent a poisonous plume over neighboring Ohio, West Virginia’s water treatment is being strengthened as a precautionary measure.
West Virginia American Water announced on Sunday that it would increase its water intake capacity on the Guyandotte River. According to the utility company’s statement, there has been no change in the quality of the raw water drawn from the Ohio River.
There are no longer any advisories in effect regarding the consumption of drinking water, and the firm’s policy is to prioritize the health and safety of their customers over all other concerns.
On February 3, an accident near East Palestine, Ohio, resulted in the derailment of fifty trains, ten of which were transporting hazardous chemicals. After some time, the workers set fire to five of the automobiles, releasing a dense cloud of vinyl chloride into the air. This was done to eliminate the highly flammable and hazardous chemicals in a risk-free manner.
Authorities ordered the evacuation of certain surrounding villages in Ohio and Pennsylvania out of an abundance of caution; however, the people of those communities have since been allowed to return to their homes.
Residents from both states have joined forces to sue Norfolk Southern in federal court to force the company to conduct health monitoring.
On Thursday, two Pennsylvania residents filed a lawsuit against the railroad, demanding that everyone living within a thirty-mile (48-kilometer) radius of the incident be tested for toxic chemical exposure and given any necessary treatment. They also demanded that the railroad cover the costs of the testing and any necessary treatment. Furthermore, the claim seeks monetary compensation for the damages sustained.
