Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns on Earth. It is primarily caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, and natural gas) and deforestation. These activities release greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). These GHGs trap heat within the Earth’s atmosphere, leading to a phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect.

Here’s a breakdown of the science of climate change and its impacts on the environment and society:

  1. Greenhouse Effect: The Earth naturally maintains a stable temperature due to the greenhouse effect. GHGs in the atmosphere act like a blanket, trapping outgoing heat from the Earth’s surface and preventing it from escaping into space. This natural greenhouse effect is essential for supporting life on Earth.
  2. Enhanced Greenhouse Effect: Human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, have significantly increased the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. This excessive release of GHGs intensifies the greenhouse effect, leading to global warming.
  3. Global Warming: The increased concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere causes the Earth’s average surface temperature to rise, resulting in global warming. Since the Industrial Revolution, the global average temperature has increased by approximately 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit).
  4. Climate Patterns: Climate change disrupts weather patterns, leading to changes in precipitation, temperature extremes, and the frequency of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves. These changes vary regionally but generally result in increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
  5. Rising Sea Levels: The melting of glaciers and ice caps, along with the thermal expansion of seawater due to warming, contribute to rising sea levels. This phenomenon poses significant threats to coastal communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems, leading to increased flooding and erosion.
  6. Ocean Acidification: The increased absorption of CO2 by the oceans leads to a process called ocean acidification. CO2 reacts with seawater, lowering its pH and making it more acidic. Ocean acidification has harmful effects on marine life, particularly organisms that rely on calcium carbonate to build their shells and skeletons.
  7. Biodiversity Loss: Climate change is a major driver of species extinction and loss of biodiversity. As temperatures shift, ecosystems become disrupted, and many species struggle to adapt or migrate to more suitable habitats. This disruption affects not only individual species but also entire ecosystems and the services they provide.
  8. Health Impacts: Climate change has direct and indirect impacts on human health. Heatwaves, increased air pollution, changes in disease patterns, food and water shortages, and mental health issues associated with climate-related disasters can all have adverse effects on human well-being.
  9. Socioeconomic Consequences: Climate change exacerbates existing social and economic vulnerabilities. Disruptions in agriculture, water availability, and infrastructure can lead to food and water scarcity, displacement of communities, economic losses, and increased social inequality.

Addressing climate change requires global efforts to reduce GHG emissions, transition to renewable energy sources, improve energy efficiency, promote sustainable land management practices, and adapt to the changes that are already occurring. International agreements like the Paris Agreement aim to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius to minimize the impacts of climate change.
